My kids have always been super motivated by charts. From the time my daughter was 3 years old and trying to break her thumb sucking habit, charts just worked for her! Thats why I designed free chore chart for kids.
It’s the perfect way to get kids of all ages doing their chores! Whether you need a routine for summer, after school, or for little ones, this simple picture chore chart is the perfect solution.
We have a number of ways we have done chores. And most work for awhile and they slowly they lose interest.
You can read about our favorite way we have found to do everyday cleaning here.
Picture Chore Chart
Only my oldest daughter can read, so we have relied heavily on these picture chore charts for the last year or so. This has been a great way to train my son about what chores are required for him every day.
I do offer all of these pictures chores plus more chores and charts in my Etsy Shop if you want to make more customizable charts! This one seems to work great for preschool – elementary school aged kids! But keep that in mind if you would like some more flexibility!
We have done chore charts in lots of different ways.
More often than not I have printed them on cardstock and laminated them. I have a pretty basic laminator like this one. But I actually use it way more than I even thought I would!
Having them laminated is a necessity with little ones! Last summer my son carried his around with him every morning while he did his chores!
In addition, it you laminate the free chore charts for kids you can have your kids mark off their chores with a dry-erase marker. Crayola even makes these awesome washable dry-erase markers that are perfect for kids! Or even better dry-erase crayons (they’re just a little more elbow grease to get off everyday!)
Summer Chore Chart Rules
Another reason I love having a chore chart for my kids is so they know what they have to get done in order to watch tv or play with friends. Whatever your stipulations are, it’s a very trackable way for them to get the things done they need to.
We have tried it all sorts of ways, and like most things, they last for a while, and then the kids get bored so we change it up. But the one thing that has always remained consistent with our chore strategies is charts. They just work!
Our summer chore schedule involves everything included on this chart plus reading for my daughter. That’s where those fancy customizable chore charts come in handy! Once they complete their chores the day is theirs, they can play or use their electronic time, or have friends over!
It’s a great way for them to know what the expectation is ahead of time. And every day we avoid the power struggle over what we have to do, since it is already decided and listed on their charts!
Implementing a chore chart for kids
I always introduce a new chore system by letting the kids give me their input. What do they want to earn, how do they want it to work. Of course I usually have an idea in mind that I steer them towards, but they are always so much more willing to follow through if they took part in the planning.
Sit down with your kids and talk about the expectations you have, and let them help you plan how those expectations are going to be met. Even my 5 year old has suggestions for ways to make chores happen!
There are so many different strategies for how to do chores, and I talk about more things we have done in this post.
Which ever way your family decides to do chores this summer, I hope this free chore chart for kids will help your family establish the consistency you want!
I love when I have a clean home, but I especially love when everyone helps to achieve that goal!
My 2 year old is great at cleaning up because she watches that her older siblings clean and have chores of their own.

Thank you!
It’s so true that we need to implement responsibility into our children early on.
I have 3 sons-2, 3 and 4 years old. Since the 1 year old I teach children to help around the house and self-care. The eldest child I raised with printable charts. But you need a lot of them. I use the Manini app for three children. It’s like printed chores cards, but in a phone. I like it so much that they get carried away and resort to asking for more tasks.
What an awesome app! I need to look into that…anything to get kids ASKING to do chores!!
